Vegetable section has carried out open-pollinated and hybrid variety development studies in different vegetable species. In recent years, mainly in tomatoes (Fresh-Processing), peppers and eggplant in breeding programs are carried out.
The purpose of these breeding programs high yield, disease resistance, shelf life, taste, earliness, hardness, color and resistance to high temperatures.
Vegetable section has developed 29 registed varieties in different vegetables species.
Tomato: SC 2121, MS 1453, MSC 50, Ege Pembesi-50, Menemen, , 1915, MASS 1001( fresh-market hybrid variety)
Pepper: Bağcı Çarliston, Ege Acı Sivri, Ege 91 Tatlı Sivri, Uraz 98, Cumaovası, Menderes, Seyrek
Eggplant: Aydın Siyahı, Kemer, Halep, Topan 374 ,Fener (Hybrid variety)
Melon: Kırkağaç 637, Kırkağaç 589, Hasanbey 1, Çinikız, Çeşme 2003
Lettuce: Yedikule 5701, Şemikler
Fresh Bean: Zondra
Cucumber: Çengelköy
Cauliflower: Winner Osenia
Okra: Bornova 2003
Seed productions of these varieties have been made by vegetable section.
Beside of this activities, have been carrying out plant genetic resources projects includes collection,regeneration and characterization of vegetable genetic resources.
