GENE BANK RESEARCH AND APPLICATION LABORATORY
Supported under TAGEM R&D projects, a project titled "Morphological and Molecular Characterization and Improvement of Specific Traits of Colonies Representing Certain Bee (*Apis mellifera* L.) Breeds and Genotypes Found in Türkiye within Their Native Habitats" was conducted across five distinct locations by our Institute, various universities, and the Central Union of Turkish Beekeepers. Utilizing the genetic material obtained from this project, and in accordance with the directive dated July 5, 2023, from the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies, a Beekeeping Gene Bank—the first of its kind in Turkey—was established within our Institute to collect and conserve the genetic resources of the country's honey bee breeds and ecotypes.
The Gene Bank aims to conserve the genetic resources of Turkey's existing honey bee breeds and ecotypes while ensuring their sustainable use by researchers and future generations.
To this end, activities regarding collection, conservation, and training are being carried out to protect honey bee breeds and ecotypes in Turkey.
