Within the framework of TAGEM R&D support program of our Ministry, "The Project of Development and Cultivation of Barley Varieties Suitable for Northern Cyprus Conditions and Establıshment of Staged Seed Production System" started in 2013 succeeded.

As a result of the breeding studies carried out between 2013-2018 within the framework of the project, most of which were carried out by barley breeders of Our Institute, Beşparmak, the first national barley variety of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, was registered by the Field Crops Central Research Institute on April 15, 2021. Beşparmak is the first barley variety developed and registered under the conditions of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Beşparmak barley variety was developed in cooperation with the barley breeders of the Field Crops Central Research Institute and the researchers of the KKTC Agricultural Research Institute.

In 2020, 1000 kg of original seeds of the Beşparmak variety, which continues to produce seeds after being submitted to the registry, were produced by our Institute and sent to KKTC Agricultural Research Institute Directorate. These seeds were sown in KKTC conditions in the 2020-2021 growing season and were grown for seed production and distribution to farmers.

The first harvest of Beşparmak barley variety was carried out at the ceremony held in Güzelyurt Agricultural Research Station by Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Mr. Nazım Çavuşoğlu with his harvester in person.

The need for seeds in barley, of which a large part has been met from abroad, will be met by seeds produced in the country with the development of Beşparmak barley variety, the first national barley variety of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Thus, foreign dependency in barley seeds will be prevented and a contribution will be made to the country's economy.
