The Central Fisheries Research Institute (SUMAE) proudly hosted the “Black Sea Blue Economy and Blue Future”workshop between May 14–16, as part of the BlueGates Project funded by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme. This pivotal three-day event brought together leading scientists, policy experts, and stakeholders to explore the evolving dynamics of the Black Sea in the face of climate change, fisheries management, and aquaculture innovation.
The workshop featured three thematic panels, each followed by SWOT analysis sessions to foster actionable insights and promote strategic collaboration across the region.
🐚 Panel 1: Impacts of Climate Change on the Black Sea Ecosystem
Experts opened the event by addressing the growing environmental challenges affecting the Black Sea ecosystem.
Presentations included:
Climate Change and Its Impact on Marine Ecosystems: The Black Sea Case
Toxic Effects of Terrestrial Pollutants on Aquatic Organisms
Distribution of Macroalgae: Eastern Black Sea Example
The Effects of Microplastic Pollution on the Black Sea Ecosystem and Evaluation in Terms of Legislation
Benthic Ecological Quality in the Black Sea
Effects of Solid Wastes on the Black Sea Ecosystem
These sessions illuminated the compounded pressures on marine biodiversity and highlighted the urgent need for targeted environmental monitoring and legislation.
🎣 Panel 2: Fish Stocks and Sustainable Fisheries in the Black Sea
The second day focused on fishery resources, presenting vital data and forward-looking strategies for sustainable fisheries management.
Presentations included:
Demersal Fish Stocks in the Black Sea: Historical Changes and Dynamics
Status Assessment of Commercially Important Pelagic Fish Stocks in the Black Sea
Acoustic Method in Pelagic Fish Stock Estimation: Black Sea Example
