Breeding and Genetics

Department of Breeding and Genetics was established by the year 1998 when our institute got the Central Fisheries institute status. In recent years application of molecular genetics is integrated into different kinds of disciplines like medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, agriculture, forestry, industry, energy and genetics became very popular.  Molecular genetics and biotechnological applications are required for seafood to develop species which own superior characteristics and to achieve species that are resistant to diseases and environmental conditions. These kinds of studies which take part in agricultural applications especially in seafood recently in our country, are very important for the fishery industry. For this reason, national targets ,determined by the government within Gene Technology Strategies, are considered while projects are being planned.

Breeding and Genetic Laboratory is a leading research division of the our instutute. Our lab represents one of TAGEM's centers focusing on population, species and community diversity of aquatic animals. A central part of our work is the application of molecular markers such as microsatellites, RFLPs, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and sequence data (Sanger) to fundamental evolutionary and ecological questions relating to the origins, levels, distribution and ecological significance of genetic variation in wild and managed populations. Molecular genetic data are derived from genomic DNA and community DNA at the ecosystem level.

We provide leadership in the production of genetic data, the development of science-based tools and information from those data, and the formulation of science-based recommendations based on the genetic information. Our research inculed both the freshwater and marine environments focusing on species of endemic and economic importance.

Our research interests include:

The analysis of population genetic / genomic structure

Phylogeography and phylogenetics

Conservation genetics

Ancient/recovered DNA in molecular ecology

Genetic management of commercially exploited species

DNA barcoding

Traceability of fish and fish products

Fisheries research themes include stock structure analysis of exploited fishes, estimation of effective population size, DNA barcoding and conservation of genetic resources.

Salmo trutta, Salmo trutta labrax, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Acipenser guldenstaedtii, Acipenser stellatus ve Huso huso, Platichthys flesus luscus, Sciaena umbra, Umbrina cirrosa, Chalcalburnus tarichi, Psetta maxima, Engraulis encrasicolus are the some of studied species.
