History

Our institution was established in 1935 under the name of Merino Breeding Farm in the structure of the Karacabey State Farm based on Law No. 867 published in the Official Gazette No.  403 on June 20, 1926 and Law No.  2582 published in the Official Gazette No.  2752 on July 15, 1934.

In 1943, it was moved to a location on the Bandırma-Çanakkale highway, 7 kilometers far from Bandırma, where it is still located. The West Anatolian Stallion Store located on the Karacabey State Farm was also incorporated into the Merino Breeding Farm in 1952.

The Institute has undertaken several important tasks in the studies conducted on Merino Production in the West Anatolia since its foundation. As a result of the cross-breeding studies conducted between German Wool-Meat Merino Sheep brought from Germany and Hungary and our native Kıvırcık Sheep, Karacabey (Turkish) Merino was developed.

In 1972, it began to provide services under the name of the Veterinary Zootechnics Research Institute. In 1987, its scope was changed into the Sheep Breeding Research Institute as a subject research institute.

In 1998, it was restructured as the Marmara Livestock Research Institute. Later, it was organized as the Sheep Breeding Research Station in accordance with the Decree Law No.  639 in 2011.

Our institution's name was changed to the Sheep Breeding Research Institute with the Cabinet Decree No.  2015/7706 of May 6, 2015 published in the Official Gazette No.  29395 on June 23, 2015.

Our institution performs its duties with this name as part of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.
