​To carry out researches in the inland waters of Turkey, our organization was established by the Council of Ministers dated 12/08/1998 and numbered 98/11855 decision and by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and directly connected to the Ministry as an institute and became operational in November 1999.

Based Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry's dated 03/06/2011 and the law on the Organization and Duties numbered 639, its named was changed as Elazig Fisheries Research Station.

Again according to published official gazette 06.23.2015 dated and 29395 numbered and bylaw dated 05/06/2015 and numbered 2015/7706, name of our institution is amended as Elazig Fisheries Research Institute.​
