Regional Aquaculture Training at ADC Trabzon: Strengthening Blue Growth in the Black Sea

Within the framework of the Aquaculture Demonstration Centre (ADC) programme coordinated by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of FAO, a technical training event was held at ADC Trabzon from 1–3 July 2025. The training was hosted by the Central Fisheries Research Institute (SUMAE) in Trabzon.

The programme brings together aquaculture professionals, researchers, and producer organization representatives from Türkiye, Bulgaria, and Georgia to exchange knowledge and enhance regional cooperation on sustainable finfish aquaculture practices in the Black Sea.



Training Objectives

This three-day hands-on programme aims to:

  • Demonstrate best practices in salmonid and sturgeon farming, from hatchery to harvest

  • Deliver technical sessions on feeding, water quality management, fish health, and diagnostics

  • Facilitate site visits to marine farms for real-life application

  • Share knowledge on governance, permitting procedures, and regional sustainability strategies

  • Promote peer learning and identify partnership opportunities within the Black Sea region

This training is a tangible step in the GFCM’s long-term commitment to capacity building, innovation, and responsible aquaculture development.



About ADCs

Aquaculture Demonstration Centres (ADCs) are regionally embedded facilities operating under GFCM’s mandate to support:

  • Research and innovation in aquaculture

  • Practical, hands-on training for youth, women, and small-scale producers

  • Dissemination of sustainable, inclusive production models

  • Strengthened links between science, policy, and industry

Today, seven ADCs operate across the Mediterranean and Black Sea region, including ADC Trabzon, which focuses on finfish aquaculture.
