"3rd Workshop on Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture" organized by General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies within the framework of Climate Change and Agricultural Ecology Studies was held in our Center between 5-7 November 2018.
The opening ceremony of the workshop was carried out by TAGEM Director General Mr. Özkan KAYACAN. Director General Mr. Özkan KAYACAN highlighted that Turkey is among the countries which is open to the effects of climate change on agriculture and food production due to Turkey's location in the Mediterranean basin where is the most affected by climate change, and the importance of the agricultural sector in the country economically and socially. Research institutes affiliated to our General Directorate emphasized the importance of integrating R & D activities into the agricultural sector and food security policies in order to adapt to the effects of climate change, intended for sustainable use of agricultural soils and water resources, drought, development of drought resistant varieties, deficit irrigation programs, conservation of genetic resources, use of renewable energy sources, Industry 4.0, Intelligent agriculture and technologies at regional, national and international scale to improve the recommendations and policies to measure the impact of climate change on agricultural systems and to take measures. In the workshop, Deputy Director General of Agricultural Reform, Dr. Metin TÜRKER expressed applications of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in his presentation on "Effects of Climate Change to Agriculture".
Totally 59 participants of Prof. Dr. Levent KURNAZ from Boğaziçi University, Prof. Dr. Ömer Lütfü ŞEN from İstanbul Technical University, Prof. Dr. İbrahim ORTAŞ from Çukurova University, Prof. Dr. Taşkın ÖZTAŞ from Atatürk University, Doç. Dr. Selim KÖKSAL from On Dokuz Mayıs University, Prof. Dr. Necip TOSUN, Prof. Dr. Ela ATIŞ and Doç. Dr. Behiç TEKİN from Ege University, Prof. Dr. İlkay DELLAL from Ankara University, and from Menemen Chamber of Agriculture, AVEO Informatics Engineering with researchers from General Directorate of Agricultural Reform, General Directorate of Meteorology, Research Institutes affiliated to TAGEM were participated to the workshop.
Within the scope of the workshop, the topics on atmosphere during climate change process, climate change scenarios and projections, sustainable soil and water management during climate change process, climate risks and adaptation processes, climate change and innovative approaches in agriculture were discussed.
On the last day of the workshop, roundtable meetings were held to discuss the topics on "Climate Change and Vulnerability in Agriculture, Adaptation" and "Climate Change and Agricultural Policy", then the workshop was completed.
