Meadow Pasture and Forage Crops Department

About Department

Especially improvement and management studies have taken the priorities in the pasture and meadow sub division. Within the researches, demonstration and improvement studies, several rehabilitation and management methods were developed for both village and regional basis.

East Anatolia Region, East Black Sea Region and the South Eastern Anatolia Region meadows classified and erosion risk maps were formed also degraded parts were determined by using remote sensing and Geographical information systems (G.I.S.). According to those maps, suitable rehabilitation method developing studies have taken place.

Within the responsibility areas of East Anatolia Agricultural Research Institute, Forage Plants Genetic Resource; collection, rating and preservation activities are taking place with the collaboration of National Seed Gene Banks of Turkey.

One of our main targets is to develop new productive and high class forage varieties, on the other side enlarging cultivated forage plant areas with the contribution of agricultural extension workouts.

As a result of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) breeding studies, high class and high yield and biotic stress resist Savaş and Ömer bey varieties were improved and registered. Original level seeds of improved varieties are in production progress with the support of Forage Plant Seed Production Project which is financed by East Anatolia Project regional development directorate (D.A.P). Furthermore prostrate habitus alfalfa improvement project is under process for compatible broadcast seeding method to develop artificial pastures.

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) breeding studies are also in progress for developing both hay and prostrate habitus varieties. Lütfi Bey Sainfoin variety was registered in 2005 and seed production agreement signed with General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises (T.I.G.E.M.). Seed production right was transferred.

As a result of adaptation studies Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) species confidently grows in East Anatolia region. Within the high winter hardiness capacity, it is the unique autumn planting forage plant in the region conditions. Hungarian Vetch (Vicia Pannonica Crantz.) Breeding studies were resulted with improving two different high yield Hungarian vetch varieties with the name of Aygün and Doğu Beyazı.

As a result of clover breeding projects two different red clover (Trifolium pratense) and two different white clover (Trifolium repens) varieties were certified in 2009. Seed production is in process for those varieties. Beside forage legumes, forage grass species improvements were started in 2000 and especially hay type and semi erect habitus two different Orchard grass (Dactiylis glomerata) variety studies are in process. 3 different Orchard grass (Dactiylis glomerata) hay type varieties (Taya, Ayfam and Doğu Beyazı) were registered in 2015 and original seed production is in process.

In addition breeding studies, several agronomic development projects were resulted. Especially on this topic of external financing, projects resulted with the high success, on agricultural extension programs besides workshops helped to improve the number of qualified manpower.

As a result of the research findings, technical and practical information package was formed about grasslands, pasture and forage plants and those information's shared with joint cities related agricultural extension departments. Also theoretic and practical education programs, on the subject of forage plant growing methods and grassland management, were sustained to technical staff of provincial directorates of agriculture's extension departments.

From time to time international education programs about Grassland improvement are planning in our department.
